The Loxton Historical Village is a treasure trove of memories and exhibits from an era past, capturing the development of a typical rural community (between 1890-1950). With over 45 buildings and exhibits, each fully furnished with fascinating displays and memorabilia, you’ll experience the story told of the struggle and heartache of the pioneers who dared to tame this once harsh landscape.

View agriculture & horticultural equipment and machinery, tractors, and vehicles. Immerse yourself in our historic school building, sitting at the desks, and have a go at writing cursive. Check out the display of bookwork and things found in the classrooms in the early 1900s. Try out horseshoe toss, marbles, knucklebones and hopscotch, and young ones can play on our old-fashioned play equipment and trikes.

Experience shopping before supermarkets, in our general store, check out the hairdressers, printers, shoe shop, carpentry and saddlery shop. See beautiful artifacts and furniture in Doecke’s cottage. Our museum building holds amazing displays of wedding gowns and the beautiful Christening gowns made from them, along with lovely handmade cards and other memorabilia. You can also get up close to an iron-lung and other hospital and medical artefacts.

Easter Saturday each year we hold an Alive Day with working exhibits, shearing, blacksmithing, whip cracking and free horse and cart rides, along with many food and craft stalls, and special activities for the children. Be drawn into the Bakery by the smell of freshly baked bread, and the Pie Cart for a pie-floater.

We have a hands-on education programme for schools, and the Institute hall and venue can be hired for weddings, parties etc. Our beautiful gardens also provide lovely areas to hold a picnic whilst here.

The Historical Village officially opened on 2nd September, 1973 and in September 2023, we celebrated it’s 50th Anniversary.
